Government Confirms No Intention of Introducing Free BSL Courses for Parents and Guardians of Deaf Children


The Department for Education (DfE) has confirmed that the UK Government has no plans to introduce free British Sign Language (BSL) courses for parents and guardians of deaf children. This statement came in response to a petition launched by Katie Littlejohns, a mother whose son is moderately deaf. The petition has gained almost 19,500 signatures at the time of writing.


Katie emphasized the importance of ensuring that being deaf does not hinder a child's ability to learn a language. While free BSL courses exist, they only teach the basics and not fluency. The concern raised is that parents who cannot afford these courses and do not qualify for funding may be unable to undertake them. Katie shared her personal experience of postnatal depression and the devastating impact of not being able to communicate effectively with her son, fearing its potential effects on his development and mental health.


In an initial response, the UK Government referred to the Adult Education Budget to support adult learners pursuing qualifications. However, this response was criticized by Katie as irrelevant to the purpose of the petition. The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) also stated that it missed the mark by a wide margin. Members of the Petitions Committee, along with Katie, called for a revised response from the DfE as the original one did not directly address the petition's request.
